Madonna has lifted the lid on her fractured relationship with her daughter Lourdes, and the surprising move she made in an effort to “heal” things.

The 67-year-old pop sensation revealed her daughter, 29, asked her to collaborate on a song for her latest album, Confessions II, in a bid to repair their relationship.

Opening up about the new album, she explained that it came during a hard period of loss and grief, which forced her to reflect on her family and life.

“For instance, the song I wrote with my daughter, Lola [Lourdes]. She approached me about writing a song together as a way to heal our relationship,” she told Interview Magazine.

The ’80s hitmaker shares Lourdes with former partner Carlos Leon, who she dated from 1995 to 1997.

But it was “family trauma” that really was the driving force for her album, and the mention of her daughter appears to hint that something happened between them.

“Well, all these symbolic things happened. My step-mother died, my brother was ill, my brother died, my daughter approached me… you know what I mean?” Madonna explained.

“It’s hard for me to write a song about nothing. I have to tell a story. So I wrote about a lot of family trauma, and then we started making dance music.

“It was a really important moment, and it solidified the idea that now is the time to make this record.”

Her album release comes amid the cancellation of her biopic, which was meant to be produced with Universal Studios.

“I was supposed to make a movie about my life. I worked on my script for two years and spent two years at Universal Studios with the line producers doing budgeting and casting,” she told Interview Magazine in a separate interview.

“We had a falling out, me and Universal, regarding budget ... I’ve had an extraordinary life. I’ve had a huge life, so I needed a big budget.”

However, she said the studio “couldn’t get their heads around it”.
