Lionel Richie taken to hospital after falling ill mid-concert

Lionel Richie has been forced to abandon the first night of his new tour after the 77-year-old fell ill on stage.

Richie stopped mid-performance during a show in Minnesota, telling the audience he felt “dizzy” as he performed the lively song Dancing on the Ceiling.

Fan footage from the concert shows Richie taking multiple breaks to sit down during the song, afterwards telling the crowd it was the first time he’d ever performed the song like that.

“When you’re feeling dizzy, sit your arse down,” he joked.

Richie continued for one more song before leaving the stage for an unplanned intermission, which he never returned from.

After 40 minutes of waiting, a member of Richie’s band returned to the stage with an update.

“Unfortunately, Lionel is not feeling well. He won’t be able to continue. Additional information will be available, thank you for your patience and your understanding. It’s been amazing,” saxophonist Dino Soldo said.

Rod Stewart halts concert to use oxygen tank

Richie was taken to hospital after the incident. TMZ reported it to be a precautionary measure, but his current condition is unknown.

Following the incident, fans of the singer have questioned his decision to launch a new tour.

It comes after 81-year-old Rod Stewart was forced to pause a show to use an oxygen tank after nearly fainting on stage last week.

“These artists need to think about their health and retire,” one wrote on X.

“Wow, first Rod Stewart, now Lionel Richie. I guess these guys who are nearly 80 might want to retire soon,” said another.

Ahead of the Minnesota show, Richie had celebrated his return to the stage on Instagram.

“Opening night. Rehearsals. Sound check. Showtime tonight. Saint Paul, you’re up!” he said alongside behind-the-scenes photos.

The Hello singer is next scheduled to perform on Friday in Chicago.
