Jennifer Aniston's ex-husband Justin Theroux has offered a rare insight into the couple's post-divorce dynamic five years after their split.

The Mulholland Drive actor, who announced his split from Aniston in 2018 after two years of marriage, spoke about his famous ex-wife while promoting his latest film project, the TV series White House Plumbers.

In an interview with Esquire alongside co-star Woody Harrelson, Theroux, 51, revealed why he refuses to talk about the Friends actress to the press.

"I want all of my relationships to exist within the four walls of whatever room we're in. And I'm not trying to be evasive, but I talk to Jen - I don't talk about Jen," Theroux said.

"People will always want to gossip and say things, but you have to find that balance. And having been in a public relationship, it's much more fun not being in a public relationship.'

Theroux, who was responding to a question about Aniston, artfully dodged the reporter's probing and said anything he mentioned about his ex would likely be misconstrued.

He added: "Me saying anything, even if it was something loving, it would just turn into a thing."

"So it's a classic no-comment situation for me."

Theroux's remarks come just days after he was spotted enjoying a friendly dinner with Aniston alongside friends Jason Bateman and his wife Amanda Anka in New York City.

The pair were seen sharing a hug during their friendly reunion and Aniston was later seen holding a single red rose, paparazzi photos later revealed.

It comes as no surprise Theroux and Aniston have forged a long friendship outside of their brief marriage.

Also speaking to Esquire in 2021,  the actor revealed he and his ex-wife speak often and still have a lot of love for each other.

"We don't talk every day, but we call each other," he said. "We FaceTime. We text. Like it or not, we didn't have that dramatic split, and we love each other."

The pair married in 2015 in a gorgeous, secret ceremony in Miami, that saw Jimmy Kimmel as their wedding officiant. But just two years later in 2017, they quietly split.

When they announced their breakup in 2018, their statement read: "This decision was mutual and lovingly made at the end of last year.

"We are two best friends who have decided to part ways as a couple, but look forward to continuing our cherished friendship."
