John Farnham's sons make plea to fans following dad's cancer battle

John Farnham's sons have revealed more details about their dad's cancer battle in a clip shared on social media.

In the video, uploaded to Instagram on Wednesday, Rob, 44, and James, 36, revealed the impact the singer's diagnosis had on the whole family and came with a plea to fans.

"Our father was diagnosed with cancer two years ago," they said.

"The last couple of years have been difficult on our family.

"It started off as an ulcer inside his mouth and found out that it was cancer, it was a pretty brutal time for us all."

The Daffodil Day ambassadors asked Aussies to donate money to cancer research on the special day.

"Our dad wouldn't be here without cancer research, and that's why days like Daffodil Day are important," they said of the fundraiser taking place on Thursday.

"This Daffodil Day for everything that cancer takes, please give."

When announcing their ambassador roles, Rob wrote: "As we've seen with our dad, a cancer diagnosis doesn't just impact the person, but everyone they know and love".

"We've seen firsthand how crucial cancer research and support is, and we are so grateful for the treatment and care Dad has been given.," he said.

Farnham, affectionately known as Farnsy, was diagnosed in 2022 with oral cancer and underwent a massive 13-hour operation on his jaw to remove the tumour.

In July last year, Farnham announced he'd been declared cancer free and given the "all clear" by his medical team.

"I am the luckiest man I know right now," he said in a statement.

"It's been a year since my first surgery and to be honest I've lost count as to how many other procedures there's been since then.

"I'm sure someone's kept track of them all - let's just say, there's been a few. But, I'm home now and I'm a very grateful and happy man.

"I'm sitting here in my living room lapping up the attention from my beautiful wife, Jill, my boys Rob and James and my mini schnauzer, Edmund."

According to the statement, Farnham has been in and out of rehabilitation care, which included eight weeks of radiation treatment and supplementary surgical procedures as a result of various complications and issues including infections that presented over the past year.

Since his diagnosis, the You're the Voice singer has largely remained out of the spotlight, with fans only getting their first proper glimpse of him in photos from Rob's June wedding.

The image of the father and son was shared on July 1 to mark the singer's 75th birthday.
