'Painful situation': Jessica Simpson and Eric Johnson split after 10 years of marriage

Jessica Simpson and husband Eric Johnson have split.

The singer and actress, 44, has confirmed to People that she and the former NFL player, 45, are separated after 10 years married.

"Eric and I have been living separately navigating a painful situation in our marriage," Simpson told People in a statement.

"Our children come first, and we are focusing on what is best for them. We are grateful for all of the love and support that has been coming our way, and appreciate privacy right now as we work through this as a family."

Rumours of a split between the pair began swirling in November last year after Simpson took to Instagram to tease her return to music.

"Interviews in my Nashville music room where I unearthed my singular magic," she wrote.

"This comeback is personal, it's an apology to myself for putting up with everything I did not deserve."

While she did not specify any details about her relationship at the time, fans began to speculate that the couple were on rocky ground.

This was fuelled even further after Johnson was reportedly spotted in public without his wedding ring.

Simpson and Johnson first met at a party of a mutual friend in 2010, according to her 2020 memoir Open Book.

By July that same year it was confirmed that the two were in a relationship and by November the pair became engaged. On July 5, 2014 they got married at San Ysidro Ranch in Montecito, California.

"We are overwhelmed with complete happiness and love having made our eternal commitment," they told People at the time.

During their time together, Simpson and Johnson welcomed three children Maxwell Drew, Ace Knute and Birdie Mae.

The couple have shared that their three children are their number-one priority as they navigate this period.
