Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez confirm split and end engagement

Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez have ended their engagement.

The couple confirmed their split in a joint statement saying they are "better as friends".

"We have realised we are better as friends and look forward to remaining so," they told the US Today Show.

"We will continue to work together and support each other on our shared businesses and projects.

"We wish the best for each other and one another's children. Out of respect for them, the only other comment we have to say is thank you to everyone who has sent kind words and support."

Lopez, 51, is mum to twins Max and Emme, 13, with ex-husband Marc Anthony. Rodriguez, 45, has two daughters — Natasha, 16, and Ella, 12 — with ex-wife Cynthia Scurtis.

Neither of them have commented about the split yet on their social media accounts but the pair haven't posted a photo together in a few weeks — Rodriguez shared an image at the end March, while Lopez shared her last couple shot on February 28.

Rumours of a split first emerged last month but the couple denied their relationship was over and insisted they were trying to work through problems.

"All the reports are inaccurate. We are working through some things," they said in a joint statement at the time.

The former baseball player and the singer announced their engagement in March 2019, after two years of dating.

A-Rod (as he's known) proposed to J.Lo (as she's known) during a trip to the Bahamas.

The couple were originally set to wed in 2020 but delayed their nuptials twice due to the coronavirus pandemic.
