Jackie O Henderson is indisputably Australia's Queen of radio. Along with her radio partner of 25 years, Kyle Sandilands, the pair continue to shock and enthrall the Australian public with their lively personalities.

With a reported net worth of $50 million, you'll be shocked to know this was never Jackie O's plan at all.

In fact, it was a chance phone call that kicked everything off for the woman who is now the face of Australian radio.

Before she was a beloved radio personality, Jackie was just a normal girl from the Gold Coast with dreams of making it in the radio industry.

In 2025, the team from the Kyle & Jackie O Show flashed back to her earliest years in honour of Jackie O's milestone 50th birthday with a series of photos showing her as a toddler, teenager and young woman.

"Happiest of birthdays to our QUEEN @jackieo_official! #50," they wrote on Instagram.

The post featured four collages of photos, which showed Jackie's evolution from a little girl who loved performing into a teenager growing up in the '80s.

Here she can be seen as a young girl and teenager, with her family, with friends, and at a a birthday celebration.

Other slides showed her stint as a model, as well as promotional images from her early days in radio, but it was a long journey from her childhood on the Gold Coast to becoming one of the biggest stars of Australian radio.

One fateful day in 1993, a young Jackie called into Sea FM in a bid to win Guns N Roses tickets and won! But that's not all the 18-year-old walked away with.

The chance phone call to late night show host Ugly Phil O'Neil led to a whirlwind love affair that saw her moving to Canberra with him when he was offered a slot at FM104.7, just three months after meeting him. At the time Jackie O was about 19 and O'Neil was about 40.

"I moved with him because we were in a relationship," she said, having become the "phone girl" for his Canberra radio show.

The pair kept quiet about their relationship but are thought to have gotten married sometime in the mid to late '90s.

In 1999, O'Neil returned to the UK after he and Jackie O split, leaving the spot of her co-anchor bare.

This position would end up going to a relatively unknown Brisbane radio host by the name of Kyle Sandilands, sparking the start of a hugely successful business partnership and friendship going on 25 years.

From 2000 to 2002, Jackie O took the helm of the Australian version of Popstars, judging alongside music executive Chris Moss and band manager Michal Napthali.

One of her first TV ventures, she later revealed she was not even paid for her work on the first season of the show, which discovered and debuted Aussie girl group Bardot.

"I did Popstars for free … I didn't get paid for Popstars," she explained on a 2019 episode of her and Sandiland's KIIS FM radio show.

"No one mentioned anything about money, so I didn't mention money. I remember we were in Adelaide doing auditions … and you know how they hand out per diems, which is like $60 … they handed me this envelope, and I didn't know what a per diem was.

"I opened it and I saw $67 in there, and I went up to the executive director and gave him a big hug and said, 'Thank you so much!'

"I was stoked I was getting cash."

In 2004 the pair stopped hosting Hot30 and began their own eponymous radio show, The Kyle and Jackie O Show during drive time for Sydney and Melbourne listeners only.

In 2006 it was made official – Kyle and Jackie were the 'most hated' people in Australia.

Now-defunct magazine Zoo Weekly names Jackie O second most hated Australian identity, only behind Sandilands.

Editor Paul Merrill said Sandilands deserved the top spot after all his radio mishaps and Jackie O deserved hers for "failing repeatedly to staple together Kyle's lips".

"He's someone who's made a career out of being offensive in an entertaining way. And it's good to see Jackie O finally catching up with him."

Just one month later, they would go on to win Best On-Air Team at the Australian Commercial Radio Awards, continuing to win in 2007, 2011, and 2015.
