Harry Potter TV series has a brand new trailer that casts a glaring question about the $1 billion reboot

Cast your wands because the new Harry Potter TV series will be arriving earlier than expected – and we have a first look.

HBO has finally released an official trailer for the highly-anticipated reboot. While expected to premiere in 2027, it's confirmed Season 1 of the original series will be released this Christmas 2026.

With wands raised, questions are answered about the predicted $1 billion series, including: why return to Hogwarts when the movies are already so beloved?

The answer is in the trailer which we've magically conjured in the video above.

Fans are met with a young, unknown cast as a new era of Hogwarts begins. But from the two minute trailer alone, we see so much more into the Wizarding World and life of Harry Potter, played by newcomer Dominic McLaughlin, that never made it into the films.

Is that Harry Potter in a normal Muggle school?! And what is Aunt Petunia doing that has fans screaming "that's THE DETAILS WE WANTED!"?

When you're playing with an estimated £75million (AUD$144 million) an episode, according to The Sun, you'd hope the creators behind the series will do the franchise justice.

With eight-episodes confirmed for the magical reimagining of J.K. Rowling's beloved books, by that logic, we're looking at potentially $1 billion series.

This is the same network that produced big scale shows such as House of Dragon and Game of Thrones.

Deadline reported that HBO's House of the Dragon cost nearly $200 million to make, on top of the network's "biggest marketing campaign ever".

"I imagine [the Harry Potter TV series] will be that scale or higher. The shorter answer is whatever it takes to make a quality show," HBO boss Casey Bloys told the publication.

So take our estimate with a grain of salt.

We're also competing with an eight-film franchise that grossed nearly US$8 billion (approx. $10.3 billion) worldwide, so it's expected a single trailer fans will leave fans divided.

Especially when frame-for-frame some scenes are almost exactly the same as the original Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone film.

We see 'the boy who lived' curled up in the cupboard under the stairs. We see Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger (played by young Alastair Stout and Arabella Stanton), meeting Harry Potter for the first time on Hogwarts express.

"If only we already had 7 movies showing exactly the story they are going to show us. IF ONLY," one fan reacted in the comments section under the official trailer's release.

"This feels like one of those parallel universes where everything is the same, but slightly off," wrote another.

While a third fan felt like they "stepped into a surreal alternate reality" of their favourite films: "All the details are there and it looks good. but my brain isn't comprehending."

Perhaps the series isn't made for fans of the films, but fans of the books. Book fans are already rejoicing over smaller details seen in the first-look.

"PETUNIA BEING BLONDE THIS TIME YES," one viewer celebrated, of Harry's aunt.

"And Dudley!" said another.

One viewer reacted saying they "hated [Aunt Petunia] more" from that one trailer scene than they ever did with the books or movies, which is exactly what her character needed.

"The Dursleys were annoying in the movies but more in a comedic way. They're definitely 100% the Dursleys from the book here, especially Petunia with that disgusted look she always had for Harry," agreed another fan.

Others pointed out that the Hogwarts set even looks "more book accurate".

Interestingly enough, the new series was filmed at Warner Bros Studios in Leavesden, where the original films starring Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint were made.

But there were some details in the new trailer fans couldn't get past.

Fans were nostalgic for the original Harry Potter theme score. Mind you, legendary film composer and two-time Oscar winner Hans Zimmer will be scoring this series.

And when both fans of the books and films grew up with beloved characters cast to perfection with equally beloved stars, it's hard to imagine the likes of Professor McGonagall and Dumbledore as anyone else.

Unless of course Hogwarts headmaster Professor Dumbledore is played by Hollywood heavyweight John Lithgow, which he is, so you have reason to be excited.

Other casting announcements include Ozark's Janet McTeer as Professor McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Professor Snape and Nick Frost as beloved half-giant gamekeeper Hagrid.

The actors of the original film franchise certainly brought magic to their roles in the movies, so there will be big shoes to fill.

But in the end, it's the spellbinding setting of Hogwarts and the magic of Harry's story that will be the true star of the show.

The series will allow for different stories to be developed and secrets to be unearthed as the franchise expands in ways we never even dreamed of.

Officially titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, the first season of HBO's original Harry Potter series will premiere Christmas 2026 on HBO Max.

The TV series will be continue to be an adaptation of JK Rowling's popular books, with each book expected to play out across a season of the show so expect a total of seven seasons.
