Iconic British movie location goes up in flames in ‘deliberately’ lit blaze

Authorities in South Yorkshire believe the blaze at Shiregreen Working Men’s Club in Sheffield was deliberately lit.

The club proudly had a sign across the front of the building, labelling it the “Home of The Fully Monty”. The facade - including the sign - remains intact, but the inside of the building didn’t fare so well.
The Oscar-winning comedy told the story of six unemployed steelworkers in Sheffield, in the north of England, who created a male striptease act to make some money.
The box office smash went on to become one of Britain’s highest-grossing films of all time.
Many of the scenes were filmed inside the Shiregreen Working Men’s Club, making the venue famous for a number of years.

A decline in trade ultimately led to the club shutting down in 2018.
Locals have been hoping to save the club from being torn down over the years, with a 2020 petition successfully saving it from demolition.
It was the subject of two planning permissions - a flat conversion in 2020, as well as a boxing gym with café and community centre in 2024 - that were both later scrapped, leaving the building empty.
South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue deployed eight fire engines to the “fire in a derelict building on Shiregreen Lane, Sheffield” about 5.30pm on Sunday [2.30am Monday AEST).

“The building was unoccupied and no injuries were reported,” a spokesperson said.
“It is believed that the fire was started deliberately and we have launched an arson investigation.”
In clips shared online, fire can be seen spreading through the rooms and out of the roof of the fenced-off property.
