In a lengthy Facebook post, Molly mini-series actor Samuel Johnson opened up about his 'progressive' family and urged government officials to act on marriage equality in Australia.

"This is a picture from a paper in the '70s, featuring my dad holding my sister Hilde, while mum makes coin shooting pool," Samuel, 38, captioned a photo of a faded newspaper clipping with the headline 'Dad is quite at home holding the baby!'.

The retired actor, who founded the Love Your Sister organisation after his sister Connie was diagnosed with breast cancer, went on to praise his "fairly progressive" family and make a direct plea to the Australian government to legalise gay marriage.

"I'll be f----- if this family hasn't epitomised what family should be. Out and f------ proud," he concluded his post. "Hurry up government people, we were on to this s--- decades ago."

Samuel and Connie have so far raised more than $2.2 million for breast cancer awareness, largely due to a campaign that involved The Secret Life of Us alum Samuel riding more than 15,000km around Australia on a unicycle.
