Amy Winehouse's ex-husband claims she attempted suicide eight weeks before her death

Amy's final cry for help: In a new interview, Blake Fielder-Civil alleges his ex-wife Amy Winehouse attempted suicide eight weeks before her death in 2011.

At the time, Blake's new girlfriend, Sarah Aspin, was in labour with his first child when the 'Back to Black' singer called Blake to remind him it was their wedding anniversary, May 18.

"I told her I couldn't talk, as Sarah was having my baby and hung up," he told the U.K.'s Sun on Sunday. "In hindsight, I should have known that would really upset and hurt her."

Blake, 34, says he quickly realised the devastating impact his words could have on an already-fragile Amy, whom he divorced in 2009 after two years of marriage.

"Amy would have loved to have a child, yet it was Sarah having a baby with me and not her," he said. "But I was caught up in the moment and I didn't think. The day after, I phoned her to apologise and say happy anniversary."

But, he claims, the damage had already been done.

"She told me she had cut herself really badly," he said. "She said it had been serious."

The 27-year-old singer died from alcohol poisoning just eight weeks later, on July 23, 2011.

While Amy publicly battled heroin and alcohol addiction while married to Blake, the five-time Grammy winner had managed to kick her heroin habit before their split.

Despite her official cause of death, Blake considers her premature passing a suicide.

"Maybe she expected someone to come in and stop her, take the bottle away," he said. "But instead she was left alone to drink herself to death in that house.

"The people around her were so busy celebrating our divorce and her giving up her heroin habit that they didn’t see how much work still had to be done."

Blake has previously admitted that he was the one to introduce Amy to heroin.

"I was smoking it on foil and she said can I try some," he recalled in 2013. "I might have put up a weak resistance - the fact is whatever I said she did end up having some."

Now a father of two children with Sarah, Blake lives in Leeds, where he was arrested and skipped bail earlier this year after allegedly stealing a purse from a bartender.
