The star was one of the last survivors of Hollywood’s golden age of the 1940s and ’50s, and before her death was the earliest surviving and oldest living Academy Award winner.
She is best known for starring opposite Marlon Brando in On the Waterfront, a film that earned her the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1955, and in Alfred Hitchcock thriller North by Northwest.
While she made her name in the ’50s, Saint’s career spanned both film and television for six decades.
Her final role was Clark Kent’s adoptive mother Martha Kent in 2006 film Superman Returns.
Saint had kept out of the spotlight in recent years, making her last major public appearance at the 90th Annual Academy Awards in 2018 to present Best Costume Design.
A year later she was photographed at an Academy Nicholl Fellowships event supporting screenwriters, before stepping away for her later centenarian years.
Saint married her husband, producer and director Jeffrey Hayden, in 1951.
They were married 65 years until his death in 2016.
Together, the pair had two children, a son named Darrell and a daughter named Laurette.

Darrell was born just two days after his mother’s Oscar win. During her acceptance speech, Saint had joked “I may have the baby right here”.
She is survived by her children, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
