Eric Dane's powerful message about his health battle after missing Emmy Awards

Eric Dane has shared a message online after missing the Emmy Awards ceremony, where he was meant to present an award.

The 52-year-old was scheduled to participate in celebrations for the 20th anniversary of Greys Anatomy alongside his co-star Jesse Williams, at the awards show.

Dane however, didn't make it to the show, and a video discussing his battle with motor neuron disease (MND), also known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), has been shared on his Instagram page on Tuesday.

"I'm Eric, an actor, a father, and now a person living with ALS," he said in the video advocating for research.

"For over a century, ALS has been incurable, and we're done accepting the status quo. We need the fastest path to a cure, and that's why I partner with I AM ALS on the push for progress.

"Our goal is a billion dollars over the next three years. Together we'll renew the landmark law ACT for ALS, get promising treatments to thousands of patients like me, and finally, finally push toward ending this disease.

"There's so much more to learn, more to do, and we have to do it now," he concluded.

Fans clocked the noticeable progression of his condition from his slowed speech.

"The progression was so fast," one said.

"This is so heartbreaking to watch 😭 he is still McSteamy in his voice ❤️ hoping you have more good days than bad ones," said another.

"Don't wanna watch it with sound. Hurts to see him like that. Will keep him in prayer," another admitted.

Before the ceremony Williams confirmed that there was going to be a planned moment on stage, speaking about his former colleague with Entertainment Tonight.

Williams commented on Dane's strength amid his diagnosis, which came five months before the ceremony.

"He's solid, the man's just solid. We have to be careful as men to still take care of ourselves, and he's got a perfect balance going. That's my guy," Williams said.

The Hotel Costiera star ended up presenting the award for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series alone, passing it off to the winner, Adam Randall for Slow Horses.

Emmy's producer Jesse Collins commented on Dane's absence the morning following the awards show, telling Variety, "I don't know the details of that."

"I just was told that he wasn't able to make it. And fortunately, Jesse was able to present by himself."

The actor went public with his diagnosis of MND, which is also known as ALS, or Lou Gehrig's disease, in April.

He shared the update on his health in a statement to People, telling them, "I have been diagnosed with ALS. I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter."

According to the Mayo Clinic, MND is "a nervous system disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord".

The disease is a rare and incurable condition that progressively weakens muscles and affects physical function.

The exact cause is not known and there is currently no cure.

Those diagnosed typically live for three to five years after the diagnosis.
