Dolly was worth $600 million, she gave most of it away to charity

As the world mourns the death of Dolly Parton, one thing that will always live on is her incredible dedication to charity, philanthropy and healthcare innovation.

Parton, who was 80 when she passed, raised tens of millions of dollars to charities over the years – from helping children’s education through her Dollywood Foundation to funding COVID vaccine research during the pandemic.

Her passion for helping the youth

The Dollywood Foundation was created in the 1980s during her career peak, helping children in Sevier County, Tennessee – where she grew up – to achieve educational success.

Through it, she created the Buddy Program, which gave $500 to every seventh and eighth grader who finished high school. The foundation’s website claims the initiative saw the dropout rate go from 35 per cent to just six per cent.

Parton also began a scholarship program in 2000, giving $15,000 to five high school seniors from Sevier County who wished to go to college to follow their dreams.

“I’m kind of addicted to the feeling of giving,” Parton told People in 2021. “Knowing that I’m doing something good for someone else.”

In 1995, the foundation implemented Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, a monthly gifting program for children under five which aimed to inspire a love of books. It was inspired by her father, Robert-Lee’s illiteracy when she founded it.

“Before he passed away, my Daddy told me the Imagination Library was probably the most important thing I had ever done,” Parton wrote in a statement on the program website. “He was the smartest man I have ever known, but I know in my heart his inability to read probably kept him from fulfilling all of his dreams. Inspiring kids to love to read became my mission.”

The project became one of her most incredible legacies, and as of 2025, it gives over 3.4 million books per month to children in the USA and internationally.

The foundation was also given a boost in 2026, when Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce gave a $2 million donation to the charity as one of numerous donations made ahead of their wedding.

“I’m blown away and overjoyed with that gratitude,” Parton said in a video at the time.

Parton also announced in February 2022 that Dollywood, her 150-acre themed amusement park located in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, would start covering 100 percent of tuition, fees and book costs for any employee going to college to further their education.

Dolly’s healthcare advocacy

Aside from education, Parton’s advocacy for improving healthcare will always be remembered. The singer donated $1 million to Nashville’s Vanderbilt University Centre during the pandemic, which went into the development of Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine.

“Mine was a small part, of course,”  Parton told Absolute Radio at the time. “I probably get a lot more credit than I deserve, but I was happy to be part of that and to be able to try to stop something in its tracks that’s really become such a monster for all of us.”

In 2026, Parton made an undisclosed yet generous donation to the East Tennessee Children’s Hospital, which was renamed the Dolly Parton Children’s Hospital in her honour.

She also donated over $2 million to the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital in Vanderbilt where her niece, Hannah Dennison, was treated for leukemia in the ’90s.

Other philanthropic ventures

It’s hard to track every part of Parton’s generosity, but she was also well known for her donation relief efforts notably in her home state.

Parton launched the My People Fund in 2016 to help people affected by the wildfires in Sevier County, Tennessee. In just one year, the foundation distributed over $12 million to those who had lost their homes.

She did the same in 2021 to help flood victims in Tennessee, with the foundation raising over $700,000 to help those affected. In 2024, she pledged $1 million to help victims of Hurricane Helene including families living in her home state.

That doesn’t even cover the millions she raised over the years for various charitable endeavours through fundraisers and relief performances.

Parton also opened the Eagle Mountain Sanctuary, a 30,000 square feet destination managed by the American Eagle Foundations shelters to ensure the safety of bald eagles.

Parton was awarded the 2022 Carnegie Medal of Philanthropy, widely considered the Nobel Prize of the philanthropic world.

At the time of her passing, it’s estimated that Parton’s net worth was between $450 million to $600 million, but the millions she donated to charity and the lives she changed for the better is something that goes far beyond any monetary value.
