Sex and the City star slams New York COVID rules: 'School drop-off every morning is like the Squid Game'

Sex and the City star Cynthia Nixon has blasted the COVID-19 rules in her native New York City after comparing her son's school drop-off to an episode of Squid Game.

The actress, 55, took to Twitter to complain about her 10-year-old son Max's experience with the surging COVID cases in schools, describing it as like playing "Russian roulette" to avoid catching the virus.

"School drop-off every morning is like the Squid Game — every day fewer & fewer people & whoever is left gets herded into the cafeteria to play Russian roulette over lunch," Nixon wrote.

"The many quarantining students & teachers today were joined by our principal himself who tested+."

A few days earlier, Nixon also used Twitter to criticise the New York Mayor for not having tighter restrictions to protect children.

"Here in NY our Mayor is all talk & 'swagger' ZERO walking the walk," she wrote.

"He says they're 'randomly testing' 20% of students, but with all the caveats on who is tested, yesterday at my 10 yo's school only 12 students out of 305 were tested. That's 3.9% of the student body."

"Read this student's account of what's happening at one of the NYC's most elite public high schools," Nixon added, sharing a Reddit post from a high schooler which describes the COVID situation in NYC as "beyond control".

"THIS is what happens when you have a Mayor who thinks swagger can replace actual functioning Covid-safety protocols that keep schools up & running & teaching effectively."

Public schools in New York City reported 4,065 cases of COVID on January 9 – 3378 students and 686 staff, according to the Department of Education.

Nixon, who married wife Christine Marinoni in 2012, is also mother to sons Samuel and Charles.

The actress is a vocal activist and ran for Governor of New York in 2018.
