Connie Johnson admits she's 'frightened' to leave sons behind as cancer battle ends

Connie Johnson has begun to prepare for the end of her seven-year cancer battle.

The mum-of-two, who is the sister of actor Samuel Johnson, gave an emotional interview on Tuesday's episode of The Project, where she broke down over coming to terms with her terminal illness and how it will effect her two sons, Willoughby, 10, and Hamilton, 9.

Connie, 40, explained that her doctors told her she was too weak to continue chemotherapy.

"They told me I couldn't continue on the chemo because my organs were struggling too much," she told host Carrie Bickmore. Connie ceased treatment for breast cancer in July.

Asked if she was scared to die, she answered, "Yes, I'm frightened."

"I have this thought all the time where one day I'll be holding the children's hands... then I'll be gone. My pain will be over, and theirs will just be beginning."

Connie has counted her work with Love Your Sister, the cancer research foundation she founded with brother Samuel, as a source of comfort during these trying times.

On Wednesday, as part of Connie's Big Heart Project, the charity has asked supporters to go to the Lyneham Netball Courts in Canberra to help construct a massive heart made from 5c coins.

"I've got the Big Heart Project to distract me, to keep me busy. To make me focus on something other than myself. Over the past seven years I’ve gone into some very deep pits of despair. I feel like if I wasn’t focused on the Big Heart Project right now that’s where I would be," she told News Corp in a separate interview.

Connie's parting wish is to break the world record for the most coins in a line -- 75.4 km. The event kicks off at 7 a.m. and all proceeds will be donated to cancer research.

"My health is declining quite rapidly and I don’t think Christmas is on my radar," she said, adding that Wednesday's event will be her "last hurrah".

Speaking about her children how her children are handling her transition, she continued, "Sometimes they ask me how I’m doing and I’ll say I’m feeling OK, so they’ll ask whether we can go to the movies."

"Sometimes I see them grappling with what it means when Mum can’t get out of bed for a whole day. I feel like I’m letting them down, because I can’t be the mum I want to be. I just don’t have the strength."

This year, Samuel memorably dedicated his Best Actor Logie to Connie and Gold Logie win to supporters of Love Your Sister. So far, Love Your Sister has raised more than $4.5. million for cancer research.
