Logies 2017: Samuel Johnson wins the Gold Logie

Samuel Johnson has taken home the Gold Logie, dedicating his award to the arts industry. 

Samuel, 38, took home the award for Best Actor earlier in the night, for his critically acclaimed performance in Channel Seven's Molly, and received a standing ovation as he took the stage for the second time. 

The widely popular actor was joined by Molly Meldrum on stage, who crowned him with a gold Akubra. 

Upon accepting the coveted award, Samuel joked that he'd been insisting his family call him "Your Royal Loginess" since he learned of his nomination. 

"As I was lapping it up for an inevitable loss, I think its only fair that that name continue in perpetuity," Samuel told the audience.  

The much-loved larrikin stole the prize from fellow nominees, Grant Denyer, Peter Helliar, Rodger Corser, Waleed Aly and Jessica Marais. 

The actor and breast cancer campaigner expressed how thankful he was for receiving the honour, revealing the television industry has given him "wondrous shelter over the last 23 years." 

"I was a very spirited, very confused kid with an excess of energy," Samuel said.  

"My dad always saw me dying from too much gusto. I was an outlier of sorts, just desperate to find my place in the world. 

"A place that encouraged me to be truthful to work harder to pursue excellence," he said, adding, "I did none of that - which is why I'm kind of so thankful." 

Molly, 74, then took the mic, explaining how he was first friends with Samuel's father. 

"I didn’t really know him because I was friends with his dad," Molly said. 

He then joked how it would have been no easy feat playing "an old drama Queen like myself."  

"And you did a great job, right," he told Samuel. 

It was a joyous end to what's been an emotional night for Samuel, who earlier gave a moving acceptance speech dedicated to his sister, Connie, 40.  

"My sister is succumbing finally to the perils of cancer after a three-decade long tussle and rather than rolling over, she's going out blazing with an attempted world record for the longest line of coins, absurdly," he told viewers. 

Earlier this month Connie announced she would cease treatment after a seven-year cancer battle. 

Together, they run the Love Your Charity organisation, which they established following Connie's diagnosis. 

Since it began in 2012, Connie and Samuel have raised $2.1 million.
