Christopher McDonald reveals heartbreak after fiancee Gina Davis dumped him for Jeff Goldblum

Actor Christopher McDonald has finally opened up about his “devastating” break-up with his former fiancee Geena Davis, who famously left him for Jeff Goldblum in the 80s.

McDonald commented on the split in a sit-down interview with the SAG-AFTRA Foundation, which covered everything from his career to his love life.

“Geena Davis and I were engaged to be married for about five weeks and she fell in love with Jeff Goldblum doing her first movie over there in Europe,” McDonald told the foundation.

“And I don’t blame him. She’s stunningly beautiful and everything like that, but you know, what happens on sets – things sometimes happen.”

“But, I was broken.”

Davis and Goldblum worked together on the 1985 comedy Transylvania 6-5000. They both worked alongside Ed Begley Jr for the project, who apparently broke the news to McDonald that his engagement was over.

“I was doing Hamlet at the time, playing Laertes, and I had another three weeks to finish and then I was going to go over and join her,” McDonald said. “So I got the bad news from Ed Begley. He did me that solid.”

“I mean I was really, really devastated.”

Davis and McDonald ended up crossing paths again in 1991, when they both starred in Thelma & Louise. In an ironic twist, the pair played husband and wife in the film.

“It’s literally five years later and [Davis] said to [director Ridley Scott], ‘Who’d you get to play my husband?’ and he said, ‘Oh, you’ll love him, he’s tall, he’s funny, uh … what’s his name? Chris McDonald,’ and then she said, ‘I used to go with him,’ and he said, ‘Even better, perfect!’”

McDonald confessed the pair “hugged it out” over lunch, and they ended up being fine on set.

Davis ended up marrying Goldblum in 1987, but she filed for divorce three years later. The pair remain friends.

She has been married four times. She was married Richard Emmolo from 1981 to 1984, director Renny Harlin from 1993 to 1998, and plastic surgeon Dr. Reza Jarrahy from 2001 to 2017.

She shares three children with Jarrahy.

McDonald married actress Lupe Gidley in 1992. The pair are still together today. They share four kids together.
