Aussie adventurer avoids paying bribe at Nigerian roadblock

Well here's another reason not to be an awful human being.

Apart from the fact that acting like a complete jerk will see you live an empty, friendless life, it might even cost you in Nigerian bribes.

But if you're willing to share a smile, a handshake and have a bit of a chat, good things will come your way.

That's the take away message from this sneaky dashcam video from Aussie adventurer Dan Grec, the guy behind YouTube channel and travel blog The Road Chose Me.

He's currently on a two-year, 128,000km expedition around Africa in his Jeep, so he's really getting to know his way around the continent.

And before we go any further, we'd like to present with this snap from his Instagram account, not because it furthers the narrative in any way but purely because it's delightful:

This video comes from when Grec and a British backpacker were travelling through Nigeria and passed through a bunch of road blocks along the way.

Grec fixed a hidden camera to the dashboard to film the exchanges with checkpoint officials, who are supposedly have a history of stinging tourists for bribes.

Most of the encounters were very friendly, with a happy handshake and polite chat from Grec making for some super pleasant road blocks.

But there was one close call bribe-wise, with an official making up some jazz about Grec's tyres and trying to squeeze a few dollars out of him.

However, being clued-in and keeping up the pleasant vibe meant Grec was able to talk his way around handing over cash.

As it turns out, just being the classic friendly Aussie we all want foreigners to think we are can get you places… places like Cameroon without paying a bribe.

"Nigeria is on the whole a friendly place," Grec told Pickle.

"The ONE bribery attempt I had is not representative of the entire country."

This method wasn't just a win for Grec's wallet, but also a win with the viewers in the comments section.

"That was well played," YouTuber Ray Mayfield said.

"Amazing how far a handshake can go. "

So there you go, it pays to be polite.
