Alleged pub killer has history of violence

A 23-year-old man who allegedly stomped on the head of an unconscious New Zealander outside a West Australian pub has a history of violence, a Perth court has heard.

Hubert Benjamin Humes is charged with unlawfully killing Jed Beaumont, 33, who died in hospital on May 11, three weeks after he was allegedly attacked in Northam, about 100km north-east of Perth.

Mr Beaumont and a friend were leaving the Commercial Hotel on April 17 when they were confronted by a group of people who had been in an earlier altercation with Mr Beaumont's friend.

Humes is accused of punching Mr Beaumont in the face, causing him to fall back and hitting his head.

It's also alleged Humes stomped on Mr Beaumont's head when he was lying unconscious on the ground.

Police charged Humes with grievous bodily harm but that was upgraded to manslaughter when Mr Beaumont died from head injuries at Royal Perth Hospital.

The Perth Magistrates Court heard on Monday that police had footage of the alleged assault and that Humes had a history of violence.

His application for bail was denied by the magistrate, who deemed him an "unacceptable flight risk" despite the strict reporting conditions suggested by his defence lawyer.

Humes will appear in the Stirling Gardens Magistrates Court on July 1.
