A 61 year-old man remains in a critical condition at Royal Perth Hospital, one of eight people injured in a terrifying crash in Perth’s north.

It was just after 11am today (1pm AEST) when the bus mounted a median strip, crossing onto the wrong side of the road and hitting a tree along Joondalup Drive in Wanneroo, making “a loud bang”, according to witnesses.

The impact significantly damaging its front, which now resembles a mangled mess.

Multiple passengers were on board the route 390 bus travelling from Joondalup to Banksia Grove.

Special operations paramedics were called to the scene to respond to multiple casualties.

The 61-year-old was first taken to Joondalup Health Campus under priority but later transferred to Royal Perth Hospital for treatment.

Tia Anderson, one of the first on the scene, told 9News the bus driver, 56, was unresponsive when they first tried to get him out of the wreckage.

He was also receiving treatment at Royal Perth Hospital for minor injuries. 9News understand he suffered a medical episode.

An 83-year-old passenger had been trying to flag the driver down on the other side of Joondalup Drive but he never stopped.

“I’m not even sure he saw me, he didn’t even slow down,” she told 9News.

“I saw him go over the kerb, over the other side and then I heard big bang.

“I was shaking, I’m still shaking.”

Chantelle Pendleton was driving behind the bus and thought something was off.

“I just thought ‘why his he going so slow?’” she told 9News.

“He was going 10-15Ks around the corner and causing traffic jams. We all sort of went around him when we could and he was hitting kerbs.”

The other six injured in the crash were taken to Joondalup Health Campus for treatment.
