Man dead, multiple others injured after serious bus crash in Victoria’s Yarra Ranges

A man has died and multiple people have been injured following a serious bus crash in Victoria’s Yarra Ranges.

The bus collided with a white car and a blue Toyota on the Melba Highway near Two Hills Road in Glenburn, north-east of Melbourne, about 2.40pm on Thursday.

Victoria Police say the driver of the white car died at the scene.

Paramedics assessed 21 patients at the scene, with two taken to hospital in a serious condition.

A teenage boy was treated for upper body injuries before being airlifted to The Alfred in a serious condition.

A man in his 50s was taken by ambulance to Box Hill Hospital, also in a serious condition.

A teenage girl was taken to the Royal Children’s Hospital, while another teenage boy was taken to Maroondah Hospital with upper body injuries – both in a stable condition.

Ambulance Victoria said 16 other patients did not require emergency treatment or transport.

The driver and passenger of the blue Toyota suffered minor injuries.

Police believe there were 18 people on the bus, including the driver.

Witness Darryl told nine.com.au the bus veered off on a bend and wiped out about a dozen gum trees before coming to a stop.

He said the bus was badly damaged, including a broken window, while one of the cars involved was also in a dire state.

“How people got out of that, I have no idea,” he said.

“It is incredible. The engine (of the car) was sitting on the bitumen on its own.”

Darryl said those inside the car were standing outside following the crash, alongside many bus passengers.

He estimated there had been upwards of 18 people on board.

He said he could not see anyone who appeared injured from where he was, while multiple drivers had pulled over on the side of the road.

At least three vehicles were involved in the crash, according to police.

He said it was the third crash in the area this week, including another about one kilometre from today’s scene earlier in the week.

Footage shared on social media shows the bus halfway down an embankment after it crashed through traffic barriers.

The bus is owned by Mee’s Bus Lines, a family-owned charter company, which has been contacted for comment.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.

The Melba Highway is now closed in both directions between Healesville-Kinglake Road, Castella and Miller Street in Yea.

The highway is expected to be closed for several hours.
