A quarter of a million Queenslanders could be missing out on a $1072 electricity bonus, the state government has said.

All Queensland households received a $550 rebate on their electricity bills in this year's state budget.

For vulnerable households, this increases to $700, in addition to the existing $372 rebate under the Queensland Electricity Rebate Scheme.

But there are an estimated 270,000 eligible Queenslanders who have not taken up the rebate.

Energy Minister Mick de Brenni urged people to check on their friends and family to see if they have taken up the offer.

"If your mum, dad, grandparent, neighbour or friend could be eligible, check in to see if they are aware of what they could be claiming," he said in a statement.

"It's as simple as calling your energy provider and registering your seniors, veterans or concessions card to your account."

The government estimated those currently missing out include:

• 70,164 in Brisbane and surrounds
• 13,593 in Cairns
• 12,483 in Central Queensland
• 34,270 on the Gold Coast
• 24,078 in Moreton Bay
• 21,962 on the Sunshine Coast
• 12,588 in Townsville
• 17,591 in Wide Bay

The rebates are paid for from progressive coal royalties, which helped boost the government's coffers to a $12 billion surplus.
