Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirms families of Islamic State fighters returned to their home state

The wives and children of Islamic State fighters are being returned to their home Australian states, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has confirmed.

It comes as the federal opposition called for more information on the security arrangements in place for the 16 women and 42 children, to ensure the community feels safe.

Albanese told reporters in Queensland today that the women and children, who are all Australian citizens, had gone back to "where they came from".

"That has been something that has been worked through with the states and it has been worked through on the basis of the national security advice," Albanese said.

"We will keep acting on the national security advice... Our priority is to keep Australians safe."

9News revealed this week the first cohort of women and children had returned to Australia this week and are living in the community.

None of them are facing or are likely to face any charges.

The women and children have arrived from the Al-Roj refugee camp in Northern Syria, where they had been languishing for three years since the fall of IS-held Baghouz.
