The federal opposition is calling for more information on the security arrangements in place for the return of the wives and children of Islamic State fighters to Australia.

Opposition leader Peter Dutton met with community leaders in Western Sydney following the federal government's decision to resettle 16 women and 42 children – all of whom are Australian citizens.

Opposition leader Peter Dutton said people in the community just wanted to feel safe.

"The are deeply concerned. I don't think you can underestimate the level of anxiety and concern that communities have got," Dutton said.

"They want to know what security overlay is being put in place."

9News revealed this week the first cohort of women and children had returned to Australia this week and are living in the community.
