Western Sydney Airport to be 'world-class'

Sydney's new airport in Badgerys Creek is set to mirror one of the world's best - Incheon International Airport in South Korea - but still doesn't have a funded rail line.

After visiting the Seoul airport, Ms Berejiklian insists Western Sydney Airport will be "much more than just building an airport" and is considering building an "aerotropolis" around it.

"We want it (Western Sydney Airport) to be a fully integrated economic precinct that will deliver jobs and opportunities for the people of western Sydney and across NSW," she said in a statement on Thursday.

Based in Badgerys Creek on Sydney's outskirts, the airport is scheduled to open in 2026, but so far it's going ahead without funding for a crucial rail line to connect future passengers.

In South Korea, travellers can get from Seoul's CBD to the Incheon Airport - a distance of 48 kilometres - on an express train in 43 minutes or 58 minutes on an all-stop train.

However, Sydney Business Chamber executive director Patricia Forsythe believes the premier's plan to turn Badgerys Creek into more than just an airport is a step in the right direction.

"It's clearly an indication the airport would be the centre of a much broader economic region in much the way that airports are around the world," she told AAP.

Despite no rail link yet confirmed, global companies are taking interest in the new Badgerys Creek airport precinct, with US defence industry giant Northrop Grumman announcing in May plans to invest $50 million in a centre of excellence in the area.

In another win for the area, Urban Infrastructure Minister Paul Fletcher announced on Thursday the Western Sydney Airport headquarters would be based in Liverpool.

The $5 billion airport is set to bring more the 31,000 jobs to the area, with Liverpool City Mayor Wendy Waller saying it's the "best possible news for Liverpool."

The premier is keen to see the western Sydney "aerotropolis" rise, announcing a summit to discuss the area's defence, aerospace, freight and logistics, agribusiness, health, education and tourism opportunities.

Korean business leaders including Incheon Airport representatives have been invited to the summit, which will be held in mid-2018 in western Sydney.
