United opposition to NSW councils plan

Politicians from opposite ends of the political spectrum have joined to oppose the NSW government's plan to merge councils.

Greens MP David Shoebridge stood beside Fred Nile from the Christian Democrats to voice their opposition to the forced amalgamation of councils across the state.

They say the move will increase rates and slash services.

"State governments want bigger councils so they can control them," Rev Nile said at a media call behind the NSW Parliament.

"They'll become an instrument of government."
