Sydney Water pays up after sewage spill

Sydney Water has apologised for spilling sewage into a southwest Sydney creek.

The city's water provider has agreed to pay $200,000 towards environmental works after more than 150 Olympic swimming pools worth of sewage spilled into Bunburry Curran Creek, which flows into the Georges River.

The spill occurred when a recycling plant overflowed because of a broken pumping station valve in November last year.

"This incident had the potential to cause significant environmental harm," said NSW Environmental Protection Authority's metropolitan director Giselle Howard.

A health warning was issued at the time for the downstream stretch of the Georges River, which flows into Botany Bay.
