Sydney to lose historic harbour landmark

The National Trust of Australia is bitterly disappointed the NSW government has approved the demolition of another Sydney landmark.

The Barangaroo Delivery Authority's application to flatten the former Harbour Control Tower at Millers Point was approved by the Baird government on Thursday.

National Trust advocacy director Graham Quint says the 87-metre high structure, built in 1971, has "fallen victim" to the government's narrow vision for the harbour.

"This landmark tower was one of the last symbols of Sydney's working harbour," Mr Quint told AAP.

He added the decision symbolised their lack of interest in preserving the city's industrial heritage.

The demolition will make way for an interpretative historical display focusing on maritime history, and follows an earlier ruling not to list the tower on the State Heritage Register.
