Sydney dugong 'picks' NRL final winner

A 326-kilogram dugong is an unlikely lucky charm but the North Queensland Cowboys will gladly welcome any good omen two days out from the NRL grand final.

Pig, the dugong who lives at Sea Life Sydney Aquarium, has chosen the Cowboys over Brisbane during a Friday morning play session with floating footballs of both teams in his pool.

While Pig took his time to gravitate to the Cowboys ball, aquarium keeper Andrew Barnes puts the indecision down to the fact that the mammal comes from Queensland and struggled to favour one team over the other.

But after a few "good luck belly rubs" from Mr Barnes, Pig was in good enough spirits to make a choice.

In the past Pig's accurately predicted State of Origin matches, so Mr Barnes's standing by his mate, saying the Cowboys were a good bet.

After making his pick, Pig, affectionately named after his eating habits, was happy to return to his female partner for brunch, with whom he feasts on 100kg of cos lettuce per day.

Meanwhile, one of the Gold Coast's most adorable residents has delivered some news North Queensland Cowboys fans will find harder to bear.

Sea World's polar bear Liya has predicted the Brisbane Broncos will win the first all Queensland NRL grand final.

But Liya was a bit indecisive in making her decision, wandering between balls for the respective sides on a makeshift footy field before finally picking up the Broncos ball.

At one stage she wandered towards the Cowboys ball but didn't pick it up.
