Evacuated Sydney apartment deemed safe

An apartment block feared at risk of collapsing after storms across Sydney has been deemed structurally sound.

Dozens of residents were evacuated from the three buildings on Ewart Street, Marrickville in the city's inner west on Tuesday afternoon after heavy rain caused a small landslide near a drain pond which backed onto the unit block.

Engineers have since inspected the building and believe its foundations are intact, Fire and Rescue Inspector Charles Begley said.

"At this stage we think the building is totally sound and it shouldn't be a problem, residents will hopefully be back at some time later today," he told AAP.

Residents who lined the street outside the building said they weren't concerned about the block falling down.

Marrickville bore the brunt of Tuesday's storm, which lashed the city with 48mm of rain between 10am and 11am.
