Strong winds could impede NSW clean-up

Strong winds forecast for this weekend could impact the clean-up efforts being made across NSW.

A cold front is moving through southeastern NSW, which could translate into strong winds on Saturday and particularly Sunday, according to the weather bureau.

"Certainly from Saturday afternoon we could see some strong winds and the Hunter in particular can be a place which sees those winds funnel down through the valley a little bit," a Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) spokesman said on Thursday.

"On Sunday we're looking at some fairly strong southerly winds and the potential for some gale-force winds there as the cold front moves up the coast."

Premier Mike Baird said with the cold front coming through, there was a sense of urgency as emergency crews attend to jobs in flood-affected areas.

"So we really want to try and get as much as we possibly can done in the next few days," he said on Thursday.

A bit of light rain is expected, according to BoM, and there will be a heavy swell along the coastline.

Winds could get up to 65km/h on NSW coastal fringes, but nothing in the vicinity of the 130km/h gusts NSW experienced during the week.

In normal circumstances this weekend's forecast is not a big event, but given the clean-up operation that's underway, it is a sensitive situation, the BOM spokesperson said.
