A snake has been confiscated from a NSW Central Coast train after its owner began showing it to fellow passengers.

Police were told the 20-year-old man took the metre-long jungle python from a backpack and started showing it to passengers in the early hours of Wednesday on a train near Woy Woy station.

Several passengers called officials concerned for the welfare of the snake, named "Bread", which the man allegedly said he did not have a permit for.

Police met the northbound train at Woy Woy station and confiscated the snake, taking it to the local police station where it is expected to be examined by reptile park staff.
