Siege coroner picked for NSW Ombudsman

NSW coroner Michael Barnes, who oversaw the long-running inquest into the Lindt Cafe siege, is set to become the state's ombudsman.

Mr Barnes will start the job in December but must first be approved by the governor, parliament, the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission and the Crime Commission, Premier Gladys Berejiklian said.

He will replace Acting NSW Ombudsman Professor John McMillan who was appointed in 2015.

"Mr Barnes brings a wealth of experience and expertise to this important role," Ms Berejiklian said in a statement on Wednesday.

Mr Barnes handed down the Lindt Cafe inquest findings in May, making 45 recommendations after an 18-month inquiry into the 2014 terrorist attack that claimed the lives of Tori Johnson and Katrina Dawson.

Mr Barnes took the top NSW coronial job in January 2014 after 10 years as Queensland State Coroner, overseeing that state's high-profile inquests including the 2003 disappearance of schoolboy Daniel Morcombe.
