Some Australian service medals have mysteriously turned up on the front doorstep of the Sydney home where they were stolen.

War veteran Allan John Moffatt, 73, last saw the medals in a chest of drawers at his Campbell Street home in Leichhardt in June, but called police on Sunday when he discovered they were missing, police said.

The seven Australian medals included two miniature medals and combat and infantry medals for service in Thailand, south east Asia, Borneo and Jasa Malaysia, as well as the Defence Force service infantry combat medal.

After police launched a public appeal, five of the missing medals were found on the doorstep of the veteran's home about 11pm (AEST) on Wednesday.

However, the two miniature medals remain missing.

Police continued to appeal for information regarding the remaining two stolen medals.
