A teenage driver who was allegedly caught speeding through Sydney's south has punched the police officer who pulled him over.

It's alleged the 17-year-old was stopped in Carlton on Tuesday evening after he was detected driving 84km/h in a 50km/h zone on Railway Parade.

Police say the teenager hit the police vehicle's window and tried to damage the car's aerial after he was pulled over.

The officer was then punched in the jaw after he got out of the car, police said.

The boy was arrested after a short pursuit on foot and charged with assaulting police, resisting arrest and malicious damage.

He's due to appear at a children's court on January 19.

The senior constable was taken to St George Hospital where he was cleared of any serious injury.
