NSW DV scheme 'will save lives'

It's hoped an Australian-first scheme giving people access to the domestic violence history of their former and current partners could save people from abuse.

The scheme has been rolled out at four pilot districts including Sutherland, St George in Sydney's south and the regional areas of Oxley and Shoalhaven.

People who live in those areas will now be able to walk into a police station and request information about their partner's convictions and breaches of domestic violence orders.

Concerned third parties, such as family and friends, can also make an application but the information will only be given to the person who may be at risk.

The NSW government says the scheme will empower victims to make a decision that could ultimately save their lives.
