An arsenal featuring a barrel cannon, more than 25 guns and about 30 firearms parts has been seized by police from a NSW Hunter Valley home along with drug manufacturing equipment.

Officers raided two houses in Maitland on Thursday, with firearms and organised crime squad detectives seizing five handguns, 21 shotguns and rifles, a 2.5 inch barrel cannon, 15 gun barrels and 13 other weapon parts, a slingshot and ammunition from one residence.

At the (other) property, "scientific glassware consistent with equipment used to manufacture illicit drugs" was found.

Following the raids, a 59-year-old East Maitland man was charged with more than 25 offences relating to the possession of prohibited and unregistered firearms.

He's due before Maitland Local Court on Monday.

Last Friday another man, 30, was charged after a sawn-off shotgun, a loaded .32 calibre revolver, a shortened .22 calibre rifle, a crossbow, a ballistics vest, methylamphetamine and more than 50 rounds of ammunition were taken from two homes at nearby Tenambit.

Charges, including three counts of unauthorised possession of a firearm and two counts of unauthorised possession of a prohibited firearm have been laid against the resident.

He's in custody while his matter is before the courts.

The raids came after an ongoing investigation by firearms and organised crime squad detectives.
