AS IT HAPPENED: Police, premier condemn protesters following pro-Palestine rally; Video footage shows officers punching man, breaking up public prayer

Hundreds gathered at a park near Surry Hills Police Station to protest police actions at yesterday's rally at Town Hall.

There were times where tensions were high but overall it was a calmer gathering than the clashes that were filmed yesterday.

Twenty-seven people were arrested and nine were charged over the Monday incident.

NSW Premier Chris Minns and Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon have defended police actions, saying they were proportionate to the situation.

Greens MP Sue Higginson has referred police actions to the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said footage of yesterday's protests will be examined and appropriate action will be taken.

Meanwhile, crowds around them hold signs saying "free Palestine" and "stop police brutality" and "stop the violence".

Herzog has paid tribute to the "beautiful souls" killed in the December 14 attack.

"As I stand here before you at this holy place of worship, I am moved to my core by the warmth of this community and overcome by the sorrow over the people we lost," he told a crowd at the Bondi synagogue.

"Their absence has torn a gaping hole in the hearts of the Jewish people.

"I see it in your faces, I hear it in the trembling voices. This is the home of a community in bereavement and mourning.

"My wife Michal and I have come here from Jerusalem on behalf of your sisters and brothers in Israel and across the Jewish world to mourn with you, to weep with you, to stand with you, hand in hand, shoulder to shoulder, heart to heart."

Greens MP Sue Higginson, who has referred the action of NSW Police yesterday to the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission, is speaking to the crowd just hours after her motion to debate protest and police violence was blocked in parliament.

"This violence cannot go unchecked," she said.

"We need an independent investigation, but we won't stop at that. We are calling for the withdrawal of every single police charge, and we will not stop until we get that.

"This is our democracy that Chris Minns is assaulting blow by blow, by every anti-protest law he has introduced."

Meanwhile, Israeli President Isaac Herzog and Anthony Albanese are attending a service at the Chabad of Bondi.

The Jewish community has gathered to pay respects to the victims of the December 14 attack.

Crowds have grown outside the police station, with numbers going from dozens to hundreds.

The mention of NSW Premier Chris Minns has sparked loud boos from the group.

"Chris Minns in the bin," they chant.

Minns has defended the actions of the police yesterday, saying their response was proportionate to the situation.

Palestine Action Group organiser Josh Lees has led chants outside the police station to kick off the rally.

"This is not a police state, we have a right to demonstrate," the crowd chanted in front of rows full of officers.

Crowds are beginning to form at Harmony Park next to the Surry Hills Police Station to protest the clashes with officers at yesterday's rally.

Protesters are opposing what they claim to be police brutality.

Officers and police on horses are standing ready outside their station.

Dozens showed up to a snap rally in Melbourne, shutting down one of the busiest roads.

Motorists and trams came to a standstill as protesters marched down Sydney Road in Brunswick before wrapping up in Barkly Square.

"We think that while there's a genocide taking place and one of the architects of genocide is in our country, there should be disruption, there should be protest," organisers told 9News Melbourne.

9News witnessed a frustrated shopper throwing a drink into the crowd.

Protesters will take to the Southern Cross Station tomorrow when Herzog visits Melbourne.
