Inmate stabbed during Sydney prison brawl

Two inmates have been injured in a Sydney prison brawl that only ended after security officers used tear gas.

Corrective Services NSW said the brawl between seven remand inmates broke out about 1.30pm on Sunday in a yard at Long Bay Hospital, a maximum to minimum security facility in Matraville.

Staff used tear gas to break them up after the inmates failed to comply with staff directions, CSNSW said.

One inmate with puncture wounds and another with cuts to his face were taken to separate Sydney hospitals.

No one else required hospital treatment.

Jail-made weapons were seized and police are investigating the incident.

CSNSW Commissioner Peter Severin praised officers for their efforts breaking up the fights.

"Chemical munitions were deployed and inmates returned to their cells without further incident," he said in a statement.

"I thank staff for their hard work. This incident is a reminder of the important work our staff undertake on a daily basis."
