A P-plate driver charged with hitting and killing a woman in Sydney's inner west faces a further dangerous driving charge after a man who was also knocked down died in hospital.

The 22-year-old driver allegedly tried to flee the scene of the crash at Rozelle on December 14 but was stopped and detained by witnesses.

Police say the driver's Holden Commodore ute mounted the kerb on Victoria Road and struck two pedestrians.

A 47-year-old woman died at the scene and a 49-year-old man was taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in a critical condition.

Police said late on Thursday that following the death of the man on Wednesday the driver has had his charges upgraded to two counts of dangerous driving occasioning death.

Police said his previous charges of negligent driving occasioning death, and fail to stop and assist after impact causing death, remain.

He is next due to appear at Central Local Court on February 3.
