Close call for Sydney driver as van bursts into flames

A driver had a close call today after his van burst into flames after he started it on a Sydney street.

Footage sent to 9NEWS showed the van being consumed by flames.

Local police and fire crews were called to the incident on Barbara Street in Fairfield around 12.30pm to find the vehicle well alight.

The white van reportedly caught fire due to mechanical problems, when the occupant started the car.

Crews extinguished the flames by 1.15pm.

The occupant was not injured and the incident is being treated as non-suspicious.
