Campers re-enact Gallipoli experience

Swimming star Leisel Jones was among the thousands of people who spent the night at an Anzac commemorative camp in Sydney to pay tribute to the 100th anniversary of Gallipoli.

Around 5000 people stayed overnight at the Camp Gallipoli event at Sydney's Entertainment Quarter next to Centennial Park, in east Sydney.

After an evening of Gallipoli related activities, the dawn service took place at about 5.30am on what was a cool and clear morning.

Campers were woken by a bugler before the service got underway with a hymn, the Last Post, a minute's silence and a rendition of the national anthem.

Campers, including Jones, also laid wreaths.

Tegan Rogasch, 17, said the event was amazing.

"Camping under the stars was great," she told AAP.

"Note to self, bring really warm stuff. To see the sun rise it was magnificent."

Michael, who travelled from Newcastle for the event, was also impressed.

"The concept was very good," he said.

"There was thousands of people here, it was very respectful, they went through the procedures you would hope they'd go through."

The event had been scheduled to take place at Centennial Park but was moved to EQ due to this week's wild weather across the city.

The crowd was so large it was spilt up into two separate groups in EQ.
