Brisbane's planned Metro service expanded

Brisbane City Council's proposed Metro light transport system has been expanded to include two routes running through the CBD.

Following community feedback, the original one-line system will be replaced by one running from the city to Eight Mile Plains and another from the Royal Brisbane Women's Hospital to the University of Queensland.

The plan to run Metro vehicles on 21km of existing busway infrastructure is expected to cut travel times by up to 50 per cent.

High frequency services could carry up to 22,000 people per hour and reduce the number of buses in the CBD, a Brisbane City Council statement said.

Queensland premier Annastacia Palaszczuk in September voiced her opposition to the Metro transit system in its original form.

But the Liberal National Party says the new model will solve a current infrastructure bottleneck.

"The Metro will get hundreds of buses off the road that currently choke the Brisbane CBD and inner city suburbs impacting all road users," Shadow Infrastructure Minister Deb Frecklington said.

The states peak motoring body RACQ has also backed the changes, saying the decision to run the service on existing infrastructure will cause less disruption.

Brisbane City Council is expected to a finalise a business case for the Metro system in May.
