The mother of notorious gang figurehead Bassam Hamzy is recovering in hospital after being gunned down in her home in Sydney's west.

Lola Hamzy became the latest shooting victim in the family when she was shot in the stomach on Thursday night.

Bassam is in the middle of a long stint in jail over a shooting murder in 1998 and for running a drug syndicate and ordering kidnappings from his prison cell.

His supporters set up the Brothers for Life (B4L) gang as a show of solidarity after he was imprisoned.

Mother-of-five Mrs Hamzy was rushed from her Auburn home to hospital after being shot through her front door and remains in a serious but stable condition.

Maha Hamze, Bassam's aunt, was also shot several times through her front door in Auburn in March 2013, while his cousin, Mahmoud Hamzy, was shot dead in Revesby Heights the same year.
