List of hotspot Sydney LGAs under essential worker restrictions grows

The area of western and south-western Sydney subject to heightened COVID-19 restrictions has grown to take in another three local government areas (LGAs).

The council areas of Parramatta, Georges River and Campbelltown are now included under worker restriction orders, NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian confirmed this morning.

The move means over half a million more Sydneysiders will now be unable to leave their LGA to go to work, unless they are listed by the government as an essential worker.

"If you live in those three local government areas, you are not allowed to leave those areas for work unless its in those critical industries that we've identified," Ms Berejiklian said.

The rules come into effect at midnight tonight.

The full list of local government areas subject to the health orders is now as follows: Fairfield, Canterbury-Bankstown, Liverpool, Cumberland, Blacktown, Parramatta, George's River and Campbelltown.

While construction is being permitted to resume with some restrictions in place across the rest of Greater Sydney, tradies will continue to be banned from work in these LGAs.

It comes after Ms Berejiklian yesterday warned the epicentre of the current COVID-19 outbreak was moving from Sydney's south-west to western suburbs.

Today, she also cautioned residents that there would be a greater police presence cracking down on coronavirus breaches.

"If you see somebody not doing the right thing, please, report it," she said.

"We cannot put up with people continuing to do the wrong thing because it is setting us all back."

In some positive news, Ms Berejiklian noted that case numbers have stabilised in the Fairfield local government area.

As a result, only aged care and health workers in the Fairfield LGA will be required to get three-day testing for the virus.

However, new testing requirements are being introduced for all essential workers in the Canterbury-Bankstown LGA who need to leave the council area for work.

They will now be required to get a COVID-19 test every three days as was previously the case for Fairfield workers.
