Live updates: Mass walkout greets Israeli PM’s UN speech

It's nearing 10pm in Washington DC, marking the end of a long day in the world of US politics that included a bilateral state meeting and a banquet held in honour of Chinese President Xi Jinping.

During the meeting, Xi pitched his terms to US President Donald Trump for avoiding conflict between the superpowers.

Their cozy outward personal relationship could not hide the clear divisions between the world leaders: both powers remain at odds on the war in Iran, trade tariffs and how to best navigate advances in artificial intelligence.

Over in New York, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu triggered a mass walkout when he approached the podium to address the United Nations General Assembly.

Netanyahu's presence drew protests outside the UN headquarters, where Oscar winner Susan Sarandon was among those arrested.

And questions are being raised back in Australia over AI and government transparency following PM Anthony Albanese's revelation that a rogue OpenAI agent hacked the Medicare portal.

Albanese again raised the breach in his speech to the general assembly, where he pointed to the deterioration of the world order and dangers of AI as he pushed for an Australian seat on the Security Council.

The US president is expected to meet with top tech industry leaders for a symposium on artificial intelligence (AI) next week, according to CBS.

Trump is scheduled to speak on Tuesday local time in Washington at an event he has described as an "extraordinary gathering of America's greatest leaders, builders, innovators, and citizens", per an invite obtained by the outlet.

Attendees are tipped to include several tech chief executives, along with Republican House of Representatives Speaker ‌Mike Johnson, NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

"Together, we will celebrate the beginning of a new Golden Age - and reveal a bold vision for our nation's next 250 years," a note from Trump on the invite reads.

"This will be more than an event. It will be a first look at America's future."

The meeting will take place shortly after Prime Minister Anthony Albanese co-signed a global declaration on AI safety controls in New York City.

Trump has yet to commit to putting any formal guardrails on the fast-moving development of AI.

He claimed on Truth Social that the only safeguards needed for AI are “a STRONG AND SMART (High IQ!) PRESIDENT".

Trump's granddaughter Arabella Rose Kushner, the eldest daughter of Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner, has appeared at the White House welcome ceremony for Xi Jinping.

Arabella, 15, was flanked by her mother, Vice President JD Vance, and his wife Usha as they greeted the Chinese president following a military inspection in Washington DC.

She also attended the state banquet, sitting close to Trump and the First Lady, according to reports.

It's no surprise Trump arranged for his granddaughter to be front-and-centre at a diplomatic visit from China.

Arabella famously speaks fluent Mandarin. 

In 2017, at age five, she performed traditional folk songs for Xi and China's First Lady Peng Liyuan during their visit to Florida.

Former Trump ally turned foe Marjorie Taylor Greene has sensationally labelled the MAGA movement a “cult” after her famous fallout with the US president.

Greene, who was branded a “ranting lunatic” by Trump after their once-close political alliance shattered in 2025, told reporters at the Texas Tribune Festival that she believed the MAGA movement was dead in the water.

“I would say yes,” Greene said when asked if she believed MAGA was a "cult".

"When you vote for someone, not only are you supporting them, but you’re holding them accountable, and if they can’t be truthful and hold him accountable to his campaign promises that affect the entire country, then they’re liars and they’re hypocrites and they’re in a cult.”

Greene described the MAGA ideology as "dead" and claimed she would never return to Congress.

“I think it’s safe to say, and I’ll pick on myself – I made probably the worst mistakes of my life,” she added.

Trump took the opportunity to boast about the yet-to-be-completed White House ballroom during his state dinner speech, declaring that he wished the banquet was being held there.

Construction for the controversial $558 million project began in October 2025 and is scheduled to finish in one year.

“As a special treat in honour of President Xi and Madam Peng, I’d like to invite everyone in the room to visit through that beautiful curtain in the back, the door, it’s all lit up and looks beautiful,” Trump told the room. 

“I can tell you that tonight, if we had it, we would have had way more than 1000 people with standing room only, and this room has about 145.”

The president offered guests the chance to take a peek at the construction site after the evening's formalities concluded.

“Anybody wants to walk into a construction site that’s nice and clean and sparkling, it’s our honour to have you do so,” Trump added.

Xi Jinping hailed previous moments of cooperation between the US and China and pushed for a “new chapter in our friendly relations” in his speech at the White House state dinner.

“Like a river that never stops flowing, history never stands still,” Xi said.

“Together, let us nurture the beautiful flowers of Sino-US friendship.

“Together, let us write a new chapter in our friendly relations.“

He pointed to the US-China alliance in WWII, calling it a “friendship forged in blood and fire”.

“China and the United States must act as responsible major countries, meet the expectations of our peoples, keep pace with the trend of our times, and explore a new approach for major countries to get along with each other,” Xi said.

Multiple journalists have been locked out of the White House state dinner despite a judge’s order to restore access.

CNN reported its own team and MS NOW had been blocked from entering.

“About an hour before Xi’s arrival was scheduled, the White House said CNN could cover the event but only with a photojournalist and audio technician, notably excluding the network’s editorial team consisting of a reporter and producer,” CNN said in a blog post.

“Other television networks were permitted to cover the greeting with reporters and producers.”

Donald Trump has gifted Xi Jinping a statue of a bald eagle as a gift at the White House state dinner.

“The bald eagle is a national symbol of the United States and an embodiment of the free and soaring spirit of America,” Trump said.

“We hope it’ll find a nice place, a wonderful place in Beijing.”

In an earlier address at the White House, Xi Jinping announced two pandas would soon be arriving at a US zoo.
