We’re wrapping up our coverage now. Here is a recap of the main developments from US politics and the Iran war.

• Huge crowds of Iranians have filled Tehran in funeral ceremonies for the slain Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who died in a US-Israeli strike, but the whereabouts of his son, Iran’s new supreme leader, remain unknown.
• A cargo ship has come under attack off the coast of Yemen in the Red Sea, an area controlled by Iranian-backed Houthi fighters.
• US President Donald Trump will meet his Ukrainian counterpart on the sidelines of this week's NATO summit in Türkey, where the Russia-Ukraine war is expected to be discussed.

US Interior Secretary Doug Burgum has said a white supremacist group that marched through Washington DC on July 4 were not doing anything wrong.

Speaking with CNN on Sunday (Monday AEST), he said he did not agree with the Patriot Front’s white supremacist, anti-immigration policy.

But he said the group’s presence was part of free speech, even if it “makes democracy messy.”

Masked Patriot Front members marched to drummers near the Capitol as Americans commemorated the country’s 250th birthday.

Burgum dodged the question whether he condemned Patriot Front or would urge Trump to.

News that OPEC+ countries will raise their oil production by 188,000 barrels a day has sent world prices falling.

Brent crude, the international benchmark, dropped 0.4 per cent to $US71 a barrel, and US crude fell 0.2 per cent, to $US68.64 a barrel.

Oil prices have declined since the US-Iran ceasefire agreement in mid-June opened up some traffic in the Strait of Hormu

Ukraine’s capital Kyiv is under attack by Russian ballistic missiles on Monday, the country’s air force said.

Explosions were heard across the city centre in the early hours as the combined attack, also involving drones and cruise missiles, continues, reports CNN.

At least two districts in the city reported fires or damage from debris, Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko said in a statement on Telegram.

Shortly before the explosions, air raid sirens were activated throughout the city.

The attack came after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned on Sunday that ⁠intelligence ⁠indicated Russia was “preparing a new massive strike.”

Russia’s war in Ukraine will form the backdrop to the upcoming NATO summit, which starts on Tuesday in Ankara.

Most American voters believe the cost of the Iran war was not worth the gains, according to new polling.

The results of the UK Financial Times survey have been released as the Pentagon lobbies Congress for $US67 billion to cover expenses from the conflict.

Among voters, 58 per cent think the war was not economically worth it, while 40 per cent said the US was in a weaker position than the one it held previously.Just 31 per cent believe the US is now stronger placed.

The research also shows low backing for Donald Trump’s handling of the conflict.

Only 36 per cent of voters approve of the Trump administration’s conduct, a two-point drop compared with previous polls.

The Russian foreign ministry said the two leaders held a “business-like” 90-minute conversation, during which the US president offered to help end the Ukraine war, reports CNN.

“The Russian side once again emphasised the preference for a political and diplomatic resolution to the conflict,” according to the foreign ministry, which claimed that “Kyiv and its European sponsors are banking on prolonging and even escalating the conflict.”

The foreign ministry claimed Russian forces were “advancing confidently” in the four-year-old conflict, but Ukraine and western nations say they are meeting determined resistance.

Putin also personally congratulated Trump “and the entire American people on this significant holiday” -  the 250th anniversary of the US Declaration of Independence.

President Donald Trump plans to hold talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Syrian leader Ahmad al-Sharaa on the sidelines of this week’s NATO summit in Turkey, the White House said.

Trump will also hold talks with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan who is hosting the summit on Wednesday in Ankara.

Both Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin held phone calls with Trump on Saturday, congratulating him on the July Fourth commemoration of the 250th anniversary of American independence.

The Ukrainian leader wrote on X he discussed the conflict with Russia while speaking to Trump.

Zelenskyy said there is “a real prospect of ending this war,” and that conversation would continue at the NATO summit.

While Iran’s new supreme leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, has yet to make an appearance in the funeral ceremonies for his father and predecessor, other family members have taken part.

They have joined senior regime figures in official mourning for Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed during US-Israeli strikes early in the war.

Khamenei’s other sons, Masoud, Meysam and Mostafa attended prayers at Tehran’s Grand Mosalla.

Revolutionary Guard chief General Ahmad Vahidi could be seen in the crowd by Associated Press journalists, flanked by plainclothes security forces and wearing a black baseball cap.

Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian and Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf — who has led the negotiations with the US - also attended.

Mojtaba is thought to have been wounded in the attack that killed his father, his mother and his wife.

A cargo ship has come under attack off the coast of Yemen in the Red Sea, the British military said.

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) centre reported the attack off Hodeida city on Sunday, which is under control of the Iranian-backed Houthi rebels.

The UKMTO said the ship reported being “under attack by unknown armed assailants” 55km south-west of Hodeida.

A skiff approached the bulk carrier and opened fire, forcing security guards to return fire, before sailing back to a larger ship about 3.7km away with its automatic identification system switched off, the UKMTO said.

The cargo ship and crew were reported safe, the British military said, adding that authorities were investigating.

Houthi fighters have previously fired missiles and drones against commercial shipping in the Red Sea.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has downplayed any divisions with US President Donald Trump on Iran and said the two leaders are “set on the same goal.”

In a Fox News interview on Sunday (Monday AEST), Netanyahu said he does not believe there is a “rift” between the two leaders.

“He does what’s good for America. I am the leader of Israel, the one and only Jewish state. I do what’s good for Israel. Ninety-nine per cent of the time, we see eye to eye,” Netanyahu said.

“But as in any family, any close friendship, there are sometimes differences of opinion, and we discuss them openly, I can tell you, in a free spirit, and usually we resolve them, too.”

Netanyahu, who may travel to Washington soon for a meeting with Trump, said the two share the same goal of an Iran without nuclear weapons.
