Warsaw's main bridge has caught fire, disrupting a key route through the Polish capital.

Firefighters said there had been no victims from the fire but the damage to the Lazienkowski bridge could be considerable.

"Forty firefighting units are trying to control the fire," spokesman Michal Konopka said, adding that "the operation is very complicated and could last a few hours".

A huge cloud of smoke could be seen hanging over the Saska Kepa neighbourhood near the banks of Vistula River on Sunday morning.

The fire broke out on Saturday night when wooden planks stored on the bank of the river burst into flames, which then quickly spread to wooden decking on the bridge.

Firefighters used a boat to launch jets of water onto the fire and try to stop it spreading.

All traffic has been diverted to other bridges in the city.

The Lazienkowski bridge was ravaged by a fire just after its construction in 1974.
