An ex-prisoner who is accused of eating parts of a woman and was found chewing her face has died after being tasered by police in Wales.

Murder suspect Matthew Williams, 34, was arrested in a room at the Sirhowy Arms Hotel in the village of Argoed, near Blackwood yesterday, The Daily Record reports.

When police burst into the room they tasered Williams and arrested him but a short time later he became "unresponsive" and died.

His victim also died at the scene, police said.

Lyn Beasley who lives near the hotel said Williams went "Hannibal Lecter" on his 22-year-old victim.

"He gouged her eyeball out, ate them and ate and half her face," he said.

"He had just been released from prison and was high on coke."

A security guard at the hotel who did not want to be identified also said Matthews, who served a five-year sentence for attacking his former partner, had eaten parts of the woman.

Williams had reportedly taken the woman back to his room for a drink before eating her.

Local councillor Leon Gardiner said Argoed was in a state of shock.

"This has hit the community for six," Gardiner said.

Once a popular pub, the Sirhowy Arms was converted into a Bed and Breakfast and was used by the council to temporarily house homeless people.
